However water and nitrogen are the most widespread limiting factors for plant growth (Celette and Gary, 2013) and our results appear relevant from that point of view. Fruit set is another process that may limit grapevine yield, especially in regions where adverse weather conditions often occur during flowering. In that case, relationships of Figs. 1 and 2 are still expected to work, but their relevance would be lower as bunch number and flower number per inflorescence would be less limiting for yield.
5. Conclusion
The bunch number per plant and berry number per bunch account for about 90% of grapevine yield variation. These components are sensitive to water and nitrogen stress, even mild, during a critical period that occurs between 400 and 700◦Cd after bud-burst in season 1. Together, these two results lead to the conclusion that in our experimental conditions more than half the grapevine yield of season 2 was determined by water and nitrogen stresses during the critical period of season 1. What happens during this critical period defines a maximum yield that could be reached in season 2 by setting maximum values of bud fertility and number of flowers per inflorescence (Fig. 5). FTSW, predawn and LNC are good indicators of the level of water and nitrogen stresses experienced by the grapevine during the critical period, and they could be used to estimate the maximum yield for season 2. Then, comparing this maximum to the targeted yield would provide useful indications on how to manage the rest of the growth cycle to reach the targeted yield. For example, the policy of winter pruning could be adapted depending on measured levels of water and/or nitro-gen stress at flowering. This would help to prevent years of low production by decreasing pruning severity after adverse conditions after grapevine flowering during season 1. Another strategy would be to try to reach a desired level of water and/or nitrogen stress during the critical period of season 1 to insure a sufficient maximum yield in season 2. In both cases, the objective could be achieved, for example, through an adaptive soil surface management (Ripoche et al., 2010, 2011b), irrigation and fertilization.
