Coordinating the course is very challenging, but also extremely rewarding: all students have reported they benefited from the experience and observed their growth in confidence as the semester progressed – they came to realize that they are able to make a worthwhile contribution to the workplace. The key challenges could be summarized as (a) the need to develop effective assessment methods, (b) conflicting expectations amongst stakeholders, and (c) increased workload for staff and community partners. However, students have increased their skill and knowledge base, experienced the culture and ethics of a workplace, and engaged with the professional identity of their discipline.
