In a similar study, Iwatake et al. [21] reported an improvement in the mechanical properties of PLA composites by the
addition of acetylated cellulose nanofibers. As the result of acetylation, the compatibility between PLA and nanofibers
and also the dispersion of nanofibers in the PLA matrix improved. Hence, the mechanical properties of nanocompsites
increased, especially for low proportions of CNF. The dispersion of CNF within the PLA matrix was positively
affected using the homogenizing and ultrasonic treatments. The increase of CNF content up to 5 wt% caused an
accumulation of nanofibers and had a reverse effect on the mechanical properties as shown in Fig. 2D.
