1. Jared hates to read and never turns in his homework. When he doesn't understand something, he doesn't ask but just leaves the question blank or skips the assignment. His goal is to graduate number one in his class.
2. Amanda has to take care of her three younger siblings and has to work a part-time job. She wants to finish high school, but she thinks she might have to take some time off and then get her G.E.D. instead.
3. Keith has trouble with math, but he wants to be a pilot and knows that he will need to have some math skills. He is willing to have someone tutor him in math after school.
4. Sandra wants to join the S'pqnish club and, she hopes, go to Mexico for a trip in the summer. She really likes to travel, but she doesn't want to learn a foreign language. Everyone will probably speak English there anyhow, so why bother?
5. Ryan is on the JV football team and is hoping he will make it to the varsity next year. He knows he has to get a higher grade-point average than he has right now to stay on the team. His teachers really like him, so he is counting on them giving him high grades.
6. Eleanor wants to get the perfect attendance award for the semester. She makes sure that she gets up early enough to get to school so she doesn't get a "tardy," and even if she feels a little bit tired or lazy, she goes to school.
