The purpose of health promotion interventions at the workplace is to develop healthy work organizations and to reduce the costs of sickness absence. In healthy work organizations, the levels of stress are low and organizational commitment, job satisfaction and well-being are high [3, 4]. In recent years, musculoskeletal
and stress-related symptoms and disorders have increased in the Swedish population and
are common causes of sickness absence and disability pensions, with a higher prevalence in women than in men [5]. This may be explained by organizational changes, downsizing [6] and high physical and psychosocial workload [4, 7]. The problems must be viewed from a system perspective.
