In terms of preventing unwanted cannula movement,
products such as CliniFix, SecurAcath and Lockit Plus have
been designed and produced to help resolve the problems
associated with securing IV devices, simultaneously reducing
the risk of infection and trauma caused by inadvertent

cannulas and tubes in situ securely, without using clips. This
provides greater comfort, convenience and, arguably, greater
protection against infective and mechanical phlebitis. In the
presence of wound exudate, hydrocolloids absorb liquid
and form a gel and thus help to reduce infection spread. In
addition, they are very secure and allow for only minimal
cannula movement. Such devices are also potentially easier to
clean than either surgical tape or transparent semipermeable
polyurethane dressings.
Another cannula securement device is the SecurAcath
system, which provides improved catheter securement
and reduced complications (Cordovani and Cooper, 2013;
Hughes 2014).
‘The SecurAcath device is a subcutaneous catheter
securement system which can be placed alongside indwelling
catheters in order to prevent migration. The device
incorporates a small blunt anchor which is placed under
the skin during catheter placement and can remain in situ
for the duration of the catheter dwell time eliminating the
need for any adhesive dressings or sutures’ (Hughes, 2014: 1).
IV devices requiring sutures and adhesive often have many
additional costs not immediately realised such as catheter
dislodgement, migration, line repositioning, maintenance
time, infections and needlestick complications (Cordovani
and Cooper, 2013). SecurAcath offers significant cost savings
compared to adhesive stabilisation devices and sutures
(Hughes, 2014); a catheter that has moved (causing phlebitis)
will need to be replaced. This has additional costs implications
in terms of a new cannula, clinical staff time and replacing
the securement device. It can also assist in the prevention of
allergic reactions to dressings (Hughes, 2014), thrombosis and
unwanted cannula movement (Abdullah et al, 2005).
In addition to securing IV cannulas products like CliniFix
and Statlock can also be used to secure urinary catheters,
reducing catheter-associated urinary tract infections (Vergidis
