Box 1. workshop content
● Introduction to Joiner’s model
● Screening:
– Using historical information to inform current risk status
– Identifying static factors, such as age, gender, race or ethnicity, and clinical and
situational factors, such as loss of housing, exacerbation of pain in a long-term
condition and onset or exacerbation of psychiatric symptoms
– Intent: stated, reflected and withheld
● Decision making: collecting and using the above information then weighing up risk
and protective factors
● Cultural competency
● Engagement and intervention: developing confidence in asking questions about
reasons for living and the desire for death. Identification of where the patient is along
the trajectory of suicidal thinking and action (ideation, preparation, thoughts of death, attempts)
● Information synthesis: how to provide and document a rationale for decisions
about risk management
● Developing appropriate systems for involving the multidisciplinary team, service
users and carers
● Sharing communication between, and within, systems (for example, clearly
communicating what actions you want others to take to reduce risk, and sharing the
plan with carers)
