The purpose of a birth plan is to describe women’s views, wishes, preferences, and expectations about childbirth and allow them to play an active role throughout the process. A birth plan is also a useful document to encourage communication with the healthcare professionals who will attend the woman and her partner. Martin (2008) highlighted the importance of the midwife in communication truthful and realistic information co the pregnant woman when preparing a birth plan. Healthcare professionals should do their best to meet the women’s childbirth expectations as outlined in her birth plan.
