I have started on new Thai Language skill lessons.
Attached is the beginning of Thai Language Skills Dictionary TEST 1 (40). I want Fah and Sai to finish this test before the end of next week then to start to develop a complete series of That Language Skills lessons on how to use the Thai dictionary that principally teach students how words are organized in thedictionary (what word comes first).
The attached test will be done as a timed test. That will be a further measure of student competence in the subject.
The draft test has four words (or letters at the beginning). Below that students will number 1 to 4 the order in which they are found in thedictionary (first to last). The 40 questions are intended to go from relatively easy to relatively difficult. I did the first 15 questions. From where I left off they will usually have words where the first letters of all 4 words are the same but there are differences in the second letter (consonant or vowel), differences in vowels that affect the order,. similar words with and without tone markers, and differences that are only found in the final letter(s).
After they add the remaining 25 questions return the file to me for formatting and English and Thai test instructions.
I intend that this test be given as a PRETEST without and instruction to all P3 to P6 students soon after school starts again. I have no idea what the results will be.
Following writing of the pretest, Fah and Sai need to write from the beginning PP lessons on how to use the Thai dictionary and how word order is organized. The first lesson will simply be on consonant order. similar to my first five questions in the attached test. Start with slides that ask students to QUICKLY tell the order of 2, then 3, then 4 consonants.
Lesson 2 should have PAIRS of simple words that have the same initial consonants and vowels but mostly differ in the final consonant and things like kon deoh comes after kon.
Lesson 3 can show that words starting with two consonants come before ones with the same initial consonant but followed by a vowel (กลาง before กาง). Also บา before บาง.
The next lesson should cover things like tone markers in otherwise similar words (บาง before บ้าง).
Then deal with the vowel order of otherwise similar words บ เบ แบ บะ ไบ โบ บา บาย etc.
They can start with my attached PP template.
The Thai text and all words they introduce need to be in separate TEXT BOXES.
The Thai text should be in Cordia New 36 pt bold.
Pairs of words (in separate text boxes) can be 48 pt Cordia New bold.
I will edit the format but they should send me the attached test and new PP lessons as they complete them for my review and to get the translation back to English too for my understanding.
After they teach the subject in P3 to P6 THIS NEXT TERM, we will have students repeat the pretest or another version of it to look for improvement.
We can later see if the dictionary lessons will be suitable for the P1 and P2 classes too.
