where the land ended and the sea began at the mouth of the harbour.Four times every minute the foghorn from the Cork lightship sounded out at sea.And then, suddenly, the fog was all around them.
'I can't see the land,'said Roger.
'Oh,John, what are we going to do?' said Susan in a worried voice.'it's half past eleven.Jim will never find the Goblin in this fog.'
'He'll wait,' said John,'until the fog clears.'
hours went by,and the fog was just as thick. the children got themselves a meal, and tried not to worry. they heard ships' bell banging in the harbour, and the horns of ship going up the river, but whichever way they looked, they could see hothing except grey fog.
'I can't stop thinking that something terrible's happened ti Jim,'said Susan.'it's two o'clock-six hours since he went.'
'High tide,'said John.'The fog will probably go out when the tide turns.we're all right here, anchored in a safe place. And Jim knows that.Nothing can possibly go wrong,He said so himself.'
And then Susan saw John's eyes suddenly open very wide.they had both heard the noise of the anchor chain.
'oh,it's all right,'said John.'the tide is begining to turn and go out now,and the Goblin is just moving around with the tide.'
but a few moments later the noise came wgain, with sudden movement of the whole ship.then there was another sharp movement, and John jumped up to run to the bows.
'she's pulling her anchor off the bottom,'he cried.
