Another limitation of this study can be seen in the static analysis of network formation
at a particular point in time. It does not attempt to explain the dynamic, evolving partners’
relationships over a period of time, given the set of explanatory variables employed. We
agree with Gulati and Gargiulo (1999) that factors explaining the formation of networks at
the early stage (so-called ‘‘exogenous factors’’ according to Gulati and Gargiulo) are distinctly
different from factors strengthening the network (so-called ‘endogenous factors’
according to Gulati and Gargiulo) and their evolution over time. Having stated so, our insights
over the network formation model do not and cannot extend beyond the network
activation stage. Future research may examine if the original explanatory factors contribute
to the sustainability and, perhaps, the effectiveness of collaborative networks.
