English Language Arts
Judy Merra ~ K-8 Faculty Curriculum Leader for English Language Arts
Introduction
Literacy for all our students involves speaking and listening, reading and writing, and using a variety of media. Our English language arts program is anchored in the standards of the 2011 Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, which includes the “common core” standards. The K-8 curriculum is grouped in four strands: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language. Attention to each strand and the connections between them is essential to our “balanced literacy” approach to instruction, learning and assessment.
Our Lincoln Learning Expectations provide several Big Ideas for each standard to indicate the conceptual basis for learning. Key Outcomes describe the most important learning standards at a grade and are the basis for assessment of student progress. Essential Knowledge & Skills include additional standards and skills to support student success in literacy. The Lincoln Learning Expectations are fully aligned to the Massachusetts Curriculum for English language arts.
