Fourth, the time course of treatment in BN differs to that of AN where
there is an immediacy and urgency to recommence feeding. In contrast, in
BN, while there are clear medical risks requiring regular monitoring, the
problematic behaviors are more variable in frequency, and food intake has
not stopped. Moreover, the difficulties experienced by the young person
may have been less visible to those around them, and there is a need for
treatment sessions to be spaced to allow families time to practice and build
on relational and coping skills over time.
