Ancient Rome was one of the most powerful in history. The Roman Empire lasted about 500 years, from 27 BCE to 476 CE. The emperors of ancient Rome, famous rulers such as Augustus and Nero, were both respected and feared. The large Roman traveled far, spreading the emperors' power Europe, the Near East, and North Africa. Most Roman people were wealthy and lived well. So why didn't the empire continue? What caused such a strong government and society to become weak and fail?
