Requirement for 3 years in an advanced
nursing practice role
It is uncertain how hours in an advanced nursing practice
role are determined. Using a calculation of a 38-h
working week, the range of time could be as little as
5016 h (38 h × 44 weeks × 3 years inclusive of all available
leave excluding sick leave) or as much as 5928 h
(38 h × 52 weeks × 3 years) that does not take into account
any recreational, long service, or study leave. If the
latter were the case, then logically it would take much
more than 3 years of full-time employment to fulfill the
requirements if the candidate were to take all allotted
leave. There appears to be no basis in theory, research, or
practice for such an arbitrary number of hours of practice
to be prescribed by the NMBA for NP applicants. It is certainly
not the experience of our nursing colleagues in the
United States and Canada or even the ICN. Within North
America, there is no requirement for a minimum number
of hours of advanced practice. If recently endorsed
NPs from the United States or Canada were to seek registration
and endorsement in Australia, they would not be
eligible for endorsement as an NP as they would be unable
to demonstrate the required 3 years full time in an
”advanced practice nursing” role.
