Many smokers first try to stop smoking without help,
although the chances of successfully stopping smoking can be
improved significantly if someone has support from a stop-
smoking service, and uses products such as NRT (McEwan
et al, 2006; Stead et al, 2008). Many stop-smoking services
are based in primary care and community settings, providing
good links for community nurses who refer patients on to
services, and liaise with stop-smoking colleagues.
