A wood-products importer is shutting its Charleston-area plant, saying it can serve the North American market more efficiently from its South American operations.
The closing by Masisa USA will affect 42 workers, some of whom will be offered jobs at the company's Atlanta headquarters, said spokeswoman Debora Tucker. The date of the shutdown has not been finalized, she said.
The local plant at 2440 Clements Ferry Road in Wando handles only about 5 percent of the wood molding that Masisa produces for the North American home-building market. It is the company's only U.S. manufacturing site.
