Both Confucianism and Mohism were optimistic in advocating societal guidance by the government.
But ren is somewhat less crucial in Mohism, because of its suspicion about relationships.
And in Mohism there is little interest in the welfare of the individual, because the interests of the collectivity is always paramount (“utility for the greatest good…”).
That is why Mohism seeks to replace individual relationships with a single standard for everyone. So the wise ruler will determine standards that will help society to follow one set of principles.
