In the phytoremediation system with attached growth, plant
uptake and biological degradation by large attached biofilms are
two main processes for pollutants removal. The performance of the
system was obviously greater than those reported elsewhere
(Table 5) even under higher organic loading rate possibly due to the
increased accumulation of attached growth microbial population
on the surface of the support matrix. As compared to the conventional
system, the proposed technology has various advantages in
removing the constraints of such factors as chocking and clogging,
and improving oxygen diffusion and microbial population.
