The IAEA Safety Requirements publication: Radiation Protection and Safety of Radiation Sources: International Basic Safety Standards [2] specifies requirements for the protection of health against exposure to ionizing radiation (hereinafter termed radiation) and for the safety of radiation sources. Ref. [2], which is based on information on the detrimental effects attributed to radiation exposure provided by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) [3] and the recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) [4], are intended to provide the basis for the regulation of planned, emergency and existing exposure situations.
