For example, the International Fragrance Association, an international body based in Geneva, the Swiss Confederation (Switzerland), that regulates the fragrance industry, has deemed certain ingredients to be allergens. Natural frankincense is included in this list, and as such Amouage had to adjust its R&D to rely on synthetic molecules. This has led the perfumery to invest heavily in R&D not only in regards to the combination of ingredients, but also in regards to the chemical nature of synthetics. As Amouage’s CEO, Mr. David Crickmore explains, “To be in the perfume industry you have to be a chemist.”
