Learning about words
-point to particular words you want to draw attention to. Ask: 'what does this say?' and ' whose name is this?'
-use a laminated sheet over the text and ask children to underline all the words on the page they know. Talk about these particular words and about any other words they are unsure of. Does the word appear elsewhere on the page? What is the initial or final sound? Are there any syllables that you can read? What does the word mean? How can we find out?
-Select a 'word of the day' from the text and encourage children to recognise and read this word in different parts of the classroom.
-Extract a longer word from the text and find any shorter words within the long word, so that the children become aware of specific letter sequences inside words.
