ABSTRACT
The purposes of this study were to examine the English listening competency of the 5 level secondary
students under the secondary educational service area office 33 in Surin province and to compare their listening
competency when listening to the English language in the sentence and discourse levels. The subjects
participating in this study comprised 802 students, selected by proportional stratified sampling technique from
85 secondary schools with different sizes of students, including special-large, large, medium, and small-sized
schools. The instrument used in this study was a 60-item-Test of English Listening Competency for
Communication, constructed by the researcher. The results of the study were as follows: 1) it was revealed that
the subjects’ English listening competence was found below the minimal passing criterion as set by the Ministry
of Education, 2) it was also shown that, when listening to English in a sentence level, although the level of the
subjects’ English listening competence was found above the minimal passing criterion (50%) as set by the Ministry
of Education, their English listening competence was found below the minimal passing criterion when they were
asked to listen to the English language in the discourse levels (conversations and short talks), and 3) the
comparison of the subjects’ English listening competence according to the sizes of their schools was significantly
difference at .05 level and the Scheffe’ test, the English listening competence between each pair of school sizes
was significantly different at the .05 level.
