Demand side management can play a positive role in
addressing ZESA’s energy challenges, which mainly
center on the ability of Zimbabwe meeting its energy
needs from the local capacity. Zimbabwe has been
relying on imports, which are envisaged to diminish by
2007. As presented in this paper, the existing potential
for energy savings could play a role as an alternative to
supply side strategies. The implementation of demand
side management would also assist ZESA address other
problems such as the improvement of the load factor
and the need to plan for capacity instead of energy.
DSM and energy efficiency would also save foreign
currency and impact positively on the environment.
