Smartphone prices decline on slow sales
Thailand's smartphone market has grown more competitive due to the sluggish economy and more cost-conscious consumers.
Prices are also being pushed down by new participants entering an already-crowded market. Some handset makers such as Taiwan's HTC Corporation and China's Xiaomi Technology Co are absent from this year's Thailand Mobile Expo, the largest of its kind in the country. The four-day event runs until Sunday at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok.Unfavourable economic conditions have forced handset makers to reduce their smartphone prices and offer more attractive promotions to drive up consumer demand and clear out old models, said Opas Cherdpunt, managing director of M Vision Corporation, organiser of the expo.Samsung, for instance, has reduced the price of its Galaxy S6 to 20,500 baht from 23,900 baht for customers purchasing the device at the event.Mobile operators are also offering affordable smartphones bundled with attractive tariff packages to attract new customers and retain existing subscribers.True Move plans to roll out a 4G-enabled smartphone priced at 1,990 baht about the middle of this month. The company expects to have 2 million 4G customers by year-end.Mr Opas said M Vision expected sales revenue of 1.3 billion baht at the event, down by 18.8% from last year.Wichai Pornpratang, corporate vice-president of Thai Samsung Electronics Co, said the company increased its marketing budget by 40% this year in a bid to boost sales amid economic downturn."Consumers may have become more cost-conscious, but they still buy a new phone every 18-24 months," he said.Samsung expects its smartphone innovations and the arrival of 4G will see the local smartphone market recover next year, Mr Wichai added.Kamol Kotepuchai, distribution director at ZTE Thailand, said the company jumped into the smartphone market after seeing the high potential here.ZTE will spend US$14 million over the next 14 months to establish its presence in the domestic market with a 6% market share. The money will be used to open 20 ZTE shops nationwide and for marketing.ZTE focuses on the middle-market and high-end smartphone segments with devices priced from 6,000 to 17,900 baht.Mr Kamol admitted the domestic smartphone market would probably see flat growth this year, with only 18-20 million devices sold.IT research firms earlier forecast Thailand's smartphone market would grow by 15% this year.Mr Kamol also said only 15-20 of the present 32 smartphone brands in the country would be able to survive next year.Even Chinese brands are playing an increasingly greater role in the domestic smartphone market.Mr Kamol said Apple and Samsung would continue to dominate the overall market next year with a combined 60% share.Michael Jing, director of device sales at Huawei Technologies (Thailand), said the company was spending 500 million baht in its latest effort to boost its handset sales to 15 million devices this year.
