For years, international businesses have looked forward to the EU's emergence as a single, integrated market. Among these are firms that produce so-called whitegoods-appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, washers and dryers. (In the past, these kitchen and laundry room appliances predominantly came in white, hence the industry's name. Consumer electronics such as radios, televisions, and stereos came in brown, so these consumer durables are called brown goods. The widespread use of colour in appliances today makes these labels somewhat anachronistic.
