Replacing a fluorescent light ballast can be a simple and harmless procedure. Follow the tips below to ensure a successful project.
Safety First
As with any electrical fixture, working with fluorescent lights can be dangerous if its power is not first turned off. The best place to turn off the power is at the circuit breaker panel. Even then, mistakes can be made. Voltage can best be checked to be sure it's off, by using a voltmeter or multimeter.
The Check for Ballast Problems
Repairing a fluorescent light fixture may require the simple replacement its ballast. But it also may also require other solutions. Before replacing your ballast, it is always wise to check for other component failures such as the starters or lamps.
Removal of the Ballast
A ballast can be removed from the light fixture by locating wires that connect it to the incoming power lines. These wires can easily be disconnected, either by unscrewing wire nuts or cutting the wires. Actual removal requires simply the removal of bolts or nuts that hold the ballast in place.
Replacement of the Ballast
New ballast installation is as simple as its removal. By using a reverse process the ballast can be re-attached to the light fixture and wires re-attached by using wire nuts.
