Indeed, national media sources have been central to the campaign, both in terms of broadcasting official policies and in promoting, or pointing a finger at, certain behaviors. An article from the Beijing Youth Daily newspaper, published in September 2006, ran the headline “How Do Foreigners See Chinese Tourists?” and recounted the unbecoming antics by Chinese tour-ists as reported in Thai, Malaysian, and US media outlets (Zhongguo Wenming Wang 2006). Photographs of tourists behaving inappropriately were posted online, captioned with statements such as “Although China’s tourism industry is developing, the teaching of civilized tourism is still deficient” (www.chinanews.com, October 2, 2006).
