Calorie count
If a food is labelled ‘low-fat’, the fat is often replaced by either sugar or sweeteners. However low-fat labels also decrease perception of calorie density – people don’t realise how many calories they are consuming as they expect it to be less. Meringues are a classic example – they are no-fat, but they are very high in sugar. A common school of thought now is that a diet high in ‘good’ fat is actually better for people than a low-fat diet inadvertently high in sugar.
