Upwelling also tends to be seasonal,occurring mainly during the time of year when winds are strong and blow in theright direction along the coast. Such sea-sonality is most pronounced on the coastof Somalia, in eastern Africa (Fig. 15.31). This area is dominated by
monsoons,
strong winds that blow northward insummer and southward in winter. Thesummer monsoon causes very intensecoastal upwelling, which dies when the winds change to the winter monsoon. When the upwelling stops, productionfalls dramatically
