The uptakes are attached to the after end of the
pilothouse, and the exhaust system is attached to this
structure. Because structureborne noise transmitted
along the exhaust piping was expected to be excessive in
the accommodations and the pilothouse, particularly at
low frequencies, a resiliently mounted exhaust system
was specified. Given the interaction between thermal
expansion, sea-induced forces and potential system
resonances, a detailed finite element analysis was recommended.
