A great deal of studies concerning the design and preparation of particular structures and
the study of the resulting properties obtained as a consequence of the process employed
have been undertaken [15]. However, analyzing the morphologies formed at surfaces
requires the consideration of the interfaces involved. Two types of surfaces can be
considered: Budkowski [10] defined “internal interfaces” (or just “interfaces”) as those
between coexisting phases, and “external interfaces” as those separating the polymeric film
from a vacuum or a substrate. Nanostructures formed by blending either in bulk or the
description of the polymer-polymer interfaces are outside of the scope of this chapter and
are covered in other chapters within this book.
