In contrast, Jones et al37 conducted
interviews as their sole method of data
collection. The semi-structured approach
they employed, used guided questions
which enabled the research to become
focused, and complied with the
Communication Accommodation Theory
(CAT)38 framework, allowing an
explanation of communicative behaviour
and the motivations behind it. This
incorporated elements of quantitative and
qualitative research, as the semi-structured
interview provided structure while
allowing the researcher to probe more
deeply for answers but was restricted to
seeking clarification and was therefore
limited in uncovering new perspectives.
