McDonald’s has shut down a proposal by Burger King to “end the beef, with beef” and create a “peace-loving” burger called the McWhopper to promote Peace Day.
In an open letter published in the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune, Burger King proposed a ceasefire on their “burger wars” to get together and create a burger made from the best bits of the Big Mac and the Whopper to promote the campaign by non-profit organisation Peace One Day to make International Day of Peace, September 21 an annual day of global unity.
According to the proposal, the McWhopper was to be made and sold for one day only at a pop-up store in a car park between McDonald’s and Burger King in Atlanta Georgia, with all proceeds going to Peace One Day.
In reply, McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook said the cause was a good idea, but that the brands could do something bigger to make a difference – and that a “simple phone call will do next time”.
OUCH.
