Sir Catchick Paul Chater, CMG 遮打爵士 (8 September 1846 – 27 May 1926) was renowned for his vision and leadership.
He was a prominent British businessman of Armenian descent in colonial Hong Kong.
Being member of the Executive and Legislative Councils, he was very influential in the social, political and commercial sectors of the society.

1869: he lived in Caine Road.
1870; inaugural run of the Champion Race later add the name of Chater.
1884, he was one of the founding members when The Hong Kong Jockey Club was formed
1885, He introduced his friend Sir Hormusjee Mody (Mody Road was named after him) to racing.
1886, they once owned a stable together with great success.
1887, he and Sir Hormusjee won 17 out of the 26 races in total over the years.
1889, Sir Paul won eight Hong Kong Derbies while his friend, Sir Hormusjee, won eleven
1890, he helped Patrick Manson establish Dairy Farm.
1891, he established Hongkong Land with James Johnstone Keswick, the taipan of Jardine Matheson. Hong Kong Land commenced the land reclamation project under the Praya Reclamation Scheme.
1892, he had been Chairman of HKJC until his death.
1915, he established the precedent of any surplus being donated to charity.
1926, almost his last act as Chairman before he died, he championed a special resolution admitting Chinese to membership of the Club.
1926-05-27, (aged 79) he passed away and bequeathed Marble Hall and its entire contents, including his unique collection of porcelain and paintings, to Hong Kong Government.
1926, "The Champion Stakes" ran since 1870 was renamed to "The Chater Cup"
1955, the race has been renamed to Hong Kong Champions & Chater Cup.
2010, strategic partnership was introduced with Standard Chartered (Hong Kong) Limited and it has been further renamed to Standard Chartered Champions and Chater Cup.
