1. Introduction
Hemianthus callitrichoides, also known as dwaft baby tears or
“HC”, is an aquatic plant which is native to eastern Havana, Cuba.
Since its
first introduction to aquascaping plant market in the early
2000s, it has become one of the most popular and highly desired
ornamental aquatic plants [1,2] as its slow growth requires less
frequent trimming [2]. Besides frequently used as aquascaping
plant, H. callitrichoides has also been used in the phytoremediation
of Cu [3]. However, the slow growth of H. callitrichoides in aquatic
environment causes slow propagation of this plant [1,2,4,5]. It
requires abundant lightning, sufficient nutrients levels and good
CO2 level in order to grow optimally [1,4,5]. H. callitrichoides is also
prone to fungal attacks when it is grown immersed and in water
which is not at appropriate pH level [4,5]. Therefore, it is crucial to
develop alternative, rapid means of propagation for this plant.
Application of in vitro micropropagation for H. callitrichoides
would be a good solution to this problem. It can rapidly multiply
the plant to produce mass amount of plant stock needed in short
