Diet therapy
Definition: A therapeutic or modified diet may be regarded as a modification of the normal diet to treat the disease or illness. such as : sodium restriction or weight reduction can reduce or eliminate medication for hypertension or diabetes.
Reasons for therapeutic diets
1. To maintain nutritional status.
2. To improve or correct nutritional deficiencies.
3. To maintain, increase, or decrease body weight.
4. To provide rest for the body or for certain organs.
5. To eliminate food substances to which the patient may be allergic.
6. To adjust nutrient intake to a level the body can properly metabolize.
Nutritional Teamwork - successful nutritional management requires complementary teamwork between the client, physician, nurse and dietitian.
1. Physician- order type of diet for the patient
2. Dietitian- modified diets for the patient follow to doctor,s order
3. Nurse- coordinate between patient, physician and dietitian
4. Nurse aid- serve trays to the patients
The type of diets in hospital
1. Enteral Feeding ( if GI tract is function)
1.1 Oral Feeding
General diet : such as liquid, soft, regular
Therapeutic diet : such as sodium restriction
1.2 Tube Feeding
2. Parenteral Feeding
2.1 Partial Parenteral Nutrition (PPN)
2.2 Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) หรือ Hyper alimentation
