Key issues
There are five key issues in this case:
1 Around one-third of Scandinavia lies within the Arctic Circle, and while there is
potential for tourism in this region, tourism development is characterized by the
frontier nature of the region and subject to a series of significant constraints –
particularly accessibility and climate.
2 In Swedish Lapland the resource base has allowed winter sports, cultural tourism
and ecotourism.
3 In the Norwegian islands of Svalbard tourism is much more constrained and is
confined to adventure tourism.
