1980s in most Western European countries (57), but
this trend has since declined, e.g. in France, which
had very high rates in the past. In most countries in
central and Eastern Europe, for example Hungary,
Slovakia, Slovenia and the Russian Federation, oral
cancer mortality in men reached exceedingly high
rates up to the 1990s. Hungary, Ukraine, Estonia and
Bulgaria showed more than 100% increases in
mortality rates for men during the 20-year period
from 1980–2000. There are now the beginnings of a
reversal.
