These discrete identity markers are in recent years accompanied by more visible manifestations, like the wearing of the hijab , or headscarf, by women and the white skullcap by men. islam is less and less hesitant about making itself obvious : this could indicate a society in crisis where appearance for as much as , if not more than , sincerity and deeply felt religious belief. is this a sign of the progress of fundamentalist interpretation of the religion? Does it show the pride of a minority which is ever more acknowledged in thai society and which affirms its presence without any complexes? or does this indicate a renewal of piety when faced with consumer " materialism " ? There is something of all these elements in the re-islamization of thai muslims. it is part of a general movement in search of points of reference which is not confined to this communitty.
