Activated sludge-verticalflowsubsurfaceconstructedwetlandsystems(VFSCW)wereinvestigatedin
order toremoveCODandNinsewageofAksaray.Overastudyperiodof25days,thesystemwasable
to achievemoderatetotalnitrogenremovalswiththerangeofremovalefficienciesof35.28%and59.84%
at organicloadingratesof940mgTN/m2 d. Intheeffluentofthesystem,CODandTNobservedwas
higher thanthosebylastofoperationasrootsofplantweredecomposedanddissolvedintheeffluentof
the system.ConventionalwastewatertreatmentplantcouldnotremoveNandPinsewageinorderto
prevent eutrophicationinreceivingwaterbodies.CWsmaybeaneconomicaloptionforNandPremoval
in theeffluentofsecondarytreatmentsuchasactivatedsludge,tricklingfilterofoxidationpondsbecause
conventional nutrientremovalismuchcostlyandcomplexcomparedtonaturaltreatmentsystems.
