Modern indeterminate cultivars have been largely produced by plant breeders for the protected cropping industry where there is a high capital investment per unit area, they are also used in some field production systems where high quality fresh fruits are required, usually for salad or ‘slicing’, and where there is adequate hand labour for training the plants and picking the fruit over a prolonged marketing period.
The indeterminate types: popular among private or home gardeners, especially in Europe and North America.
Many other characters have been included in breeding programmes; determinate and indeterminate types; resistance to specific pathogens and pests, fruit qualities, such as shape, size, and even-ripening; this last character reduces the incidence of green shoulders of the ripening fruit.
