Most studies in the antidepressant review did not show improvement
in depressive symptoms despite improvements in
adherence.45 Similarly, a study of patients with schizophrenia,
schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar disorder showed
increased antipsychotic adherence, but no significant improvements
in symptoms or well-being were observed.46 The
apparent lack of effectiveness of improved adherence may be
because most of the trials cited lasted 3 to 6 months, which
is not enough time to evaluate the overall effects. The cost of
conducting long-term studies is prohibitive.
