Recurring floods is a severe problem in Malaysia causing many deaths
In Malaysia, floods are the most important natural hazard in terms of population affected, frequency, areal extent, and socio-economic damage (Pradhan and Youssef 2011).
According to the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), 9% of land area (29,800 km2) in the country is prone to flood, 22% of the population (4.82 million) is affected by floods (Fig. 1), and the average annual flood damage is about USD 0.3 billion (Pradhan 2010).
