were successive developments in treating mental
illness by physical means (Pridmore 2009). The first
of these biological treatments in psychiatry, which
aimed to initiate convulsions, was ‘malaria-induced
fever’ to treat the psychological manifestations of
syphilis, known as general paralysis of the insane.
The second treatment was ‘insulin-induced coma
and convulsions’, which was used to treat people
with schizophrenia. The third was ‘camphor-induced
convulsions’ which was used to treat schizophrenia
and affective psychoses (Pridmore 2009).
