Rape has been reported against females from age 6 months to 93 years, but it remains one of the most underreported violent crimes in the United States. Official statistics reveal only a portion of the actual incidence of rape. For example, in 1991 the FBI's Uniform Crime Re- port (UCR) recorded 106,593 rapes or 12 rapes per hour l rape Figures by the Crime Vic tims Research and Treatment Center in the National (1992) reveal a far more serious Women's Stud (NWS) picture. Only about 1 out of 6 rapes (16%) was ever re ported to the police. Consequently, the actual number of rapes in the United States each year is probably closer to 639,500, or 1 rape every 1.2 minutes (Buchwald et al 1993). Rape by an assailant known to the woman occurs approximately 78% of the time, although it is especially unlikely to be reported (NWS 1992). Even more disturb- ing, only 1% of rapists are arrested and convicted (Her man 1992)
