In pigs Clostridium difficle can
cause neonatal enterocolitis with large economic losses for the
industries in some geographic areas [7e10]. Clostridium perfringens
is another enteropathogen in animals and it can cause a similar
disease syndrome as C. difficile [2,4,11]. Aside from systemic supportive
measures, treatment is based on antibiotics. With antibiotic
resistance on the rise an alternative approach for prevention and
treatment of clostridial infections is needed in both humans and
animals.
