Depression, the fourth leading cause of the global disease burden (the list ill-health and disease) is closely linked to suicide. Yet, disability, includes although mental disorders are a key cause of ill-health, most countries in this region spend less than one percent of their health budgets on the problem.
Worldwide, one million people die from suicide every year one death every 40 seconds. Although traditionally suicide rates have been highest among elderly men, the rates among young people have risen to such an extent that they are now the group most at risk in some countries.
