Element is the simplest form of matter. This means that matter cannot be split into smaller substances by any chemical process.
Examples of element are copper, mercury and nitrogen gas.
Element can be classified as metal and non-metal. All metal elements except mercury are solid where as non-metal elements can be in solid, liquid or gas at room temperature.
