Accounting for about 62 percent of the remaining 2.2 billion tons of dry cargoes, world container trade, expressed in 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), grew by 7.1 percent in 2011, down from 12.8 percent in 2010. According to Clarkson Research Services, total container trade volumes amounted to 151 million TEUs in 2011, equivalent to about 1.4 billion tons. These headline figures conceal some differences at regional and route levels that have significantly impacted the container trade market during the year.
